Hope

An interesting weekend for my wife, son and I. My son, who is a mechanic for Air Transport International, is also in the Air Force Reserves, and this weekend was one of his duty weekends. He serves at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, which also happens to be home of the USAF Museum. So, my wife and I trucked down from mid-Michigan to Dayton to spend the weekend with our son and to visit the Air Force Museum. It is huge, and impressive, to say the least. I mean, where else in the world can you see a B-52 up on metal stands so that you can walk underneath and see the bomb bay? |

So, what does this have to do with Hope, you ask? Most all of us are aware of the efforts of Bob Hope over the years to entertain the troops in wars all over the world. Sometimes he was flown out of Wright Patterson AFB to those locations, and he would stay in a hotel directly adjacent to Gate 12 at Wright Patterson. And – you guessed it – they named the hotel after Bob Hope. Thus, the Hope Hotel.  The museum is spectacular with aircraft from pre-World War I through the missles of today, and everything in between. But the museum also houses the National Aviation Hall of Fame where so many famous aviators are enshrined. Each year 4 more people are added to the Hall of Fame. Strolling through the Hall we found names like Olive Beech, William T. Piper, Chuck Yaeger, Orville and Wilbur Wright, Douglas, Martin, Vought and so many more. If you ever get the chance I would encourage you to visit the Air Force Museum – you will be glad you did! Until next time keep your wings straight and level Hersch!
