Actor Pilot Harrison Ford

While many of us putter around the sky in a Piper Cub, those with greater means fly higher and farther than we ever will in our own private airplanes.  But, that’s O.K.

During my career I have had the opportunity to fly jets, and I must say that they are not nearly as interesting or fun to fly as the DC-3 I flew for a few years. The 3s were never hangared, so in the winter it was out there early to sweep off the snow and deice the aircraft as best we could. Pull the props through a few times, heat up the oil with an engine heater blanket, and a few hours later you were ready to start those radials.

And the sound of those great engines still rings in my ears. But I digress.

Harrison Ford has taken flying the way it should be taken, in baby steps. Starting with a Cessna Caravan and remaining a Cessna fan he now flies a Citation 680 Soverign. But not as a single-piot aircraft. Nope, instead Harrison employs a full-time 20,000 hour experienced pilot to ride shotgun.

Wealth carries its benefits, but common sense – as my wife reminds me all the time – is not so common. But Ford certainly has his priorities right about aviating. Let’s hope he continues his safe flying habits and doesn’t bring a black eye to our passion.

Until next time keep your wings straight and level Hersch!

The three worst things to hear in the cockpit:
The second officer says, “Oh shit!”
The first officer says, “I have an idea!”
The captain say, “Hey, watch this!”
