The Red Baron

Perhaps the most famous pilot of World War I, Manfred von Richthofen (known as “The Red Baron”) created havoc among Allied pilots downing officially 80 Allied aircraft during WWI.

von Richthofen earned the nickname after his Fokker Dr. 1 triplane is painted in a distinctive red livery.

He remains to this day one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time.

Rare Video

In this rare video shows von Richthofen preparing for a flight.

Notice how von Richthofen dresses in his flying suit.

First come the pant coveralls followed by his leather flying jacket. Next comes the helmet and scarf.

He then puts on his flight suit over his regular uniform.

A quick look at the map followed by a short briefing of his fellow pilots and it is time to start the engine.

A mechanic next oils each cylinder of the rotary engine.

Until next time keep your wings straight and level Hersch!
