Piper Cub 75th Anniversary

by John M. White |

Piper Cub Taxiing Out For TakeoffBill Piper had a dream - a Piper Cub in every garage. Between 1938 and 1947 19,888 Piper Cubs were built, and today the aircraft is valued by those pilots and operators who need a STOL (Short Takeoff Or Landing) aircraft in order to complete their missions. It became the mainstay of flight training, and over 80% of World War II pilots began their flight training in a Piper Cub. It had become the primary flight trainer for the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) which trained over 435,000 pilots during World War II. Today the aircraft is manufactured by Cub Crafters in Washington and American Legend Aircraft in Texas. Piper Cubs have found many uses beyond training pilots, including being used in air shows. What follows is a demonstration of the incredible ability of a Piper Cub flown by an experienced pilot: This year at Oshkosh there was a mass landing of Piper Cubs to celebrate the 75th anniversary of this famous aircraft. For those who really love the Piper J3 Cub you need to get your own ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) Piper Cub Model. In the meantime keep your wings straight and level Hersch!
