Aiming Lasers At Aircraft: Not A Good Idea

by John M. White |

It has become fashionable for some in our society, so it seems, to carry out outrageous pranks. Just take a look at YouTube and see the stupid stuff people do, and if you follow the news you know many get hurt – some seriously – pulling off these pranks. Well, a small group of four people near Cleveland, OH thought it would be interesting to see if they could point a laser at the cockpit of aircraft, probably in the hope of causing an accident. In this case the group aimed a green laser pointer at two aircraft and a helicopter causing the pilots to complain to the tower that they had a laser pointed at them. Police said they saw a green beam flash towards a helicopter from a car and a short time later pulled the car over. Upon investigation Police found a green pointer laser and some drug paraphernalia in the car along with three men and a woman, all ranging in age from 19 to 25. If this turns into a Federal case they could each face up to 20 years in prison. Not so funny, eh? This incident reminds us that operating aircraft and helicopters is a serious business, and that the ability to see correctly is imperative to operate the aircraft safely.  Anything that interferes with the safe operation of the aircraft can be fatal, so it is important that these folks be prosecuted and the public made aware of the penalties so we can avoid any further instances of this kind. Until next time keep your wings straight and level Hersch! JetAviator7
