While the US Government figures out who to dole all that green out to, the stimulus package short changes aviation once again. While the House economic stimulus bill includes something on the order of $3.6B for spending on aviation, the amount designated for NextGen ATC is much less than what general aviation and the air carriers would like.
A number of disparate groups who generally are at odds with each other joined this time to send a joint letter to Congress asking them to include an additional $4B for NextGen. The groups lamented the fact that Congress missed a great opportunity to create thousands of jobs and improve transportation for the public by not making a more significant investment in aviation related projects.
If President Obama wants to have infrastructure projects create millions of jobs perhaps it would be a good idea to start with the aviation sector. Technology has always been led by aviation, and aviation has made significant contributions to everything from breakfast drinks to mattresses and microwaves.
Come on folks, let's put this dough where it will do some real good!
