Neil Cavuto Inteviews Smisek CEO of United Continental and McNerney CEO of Boeing CEO on Aviation and the Economy

by John White |

With the US economy struggling and everyone trying to figure out how to grow jobs, Neil Cavuto on the Fox News' 15th Anniversary Tour interviews Jeff Smisek of United Continental and James McNerney of Boeing tomorrow, October 4th at 4:00pm ET on the Fox News channel. With Boeing choosing to assemble it's 787 Dreamliner in South Carolina, a Right to Work state, the Obama administration and the National Labor Relations Board try to force Boeing to close the plant and return to their facilities in Washington for 787 assembly in an effort to expand union jobs instead of retaining the non-union jobs in South Carolina. No doubt both CEOs will discuss with Cavuto their take on aviation, the economy and the administrations efforts to jump start job growth and improve the economy. Aviation, and in particular the airlines, are dependent upon the price of oil and battling competition from foreign aircraft manufacturers as they struggle to survive in a very competitive marketplace. Boeing 787 Dreamliner CockpitFox News has been following the development of Boeing's new commercial airliner, and with the departure of the first commercial customer posted an interesting slideshow on Boeing's Radical New 787 Jet. When it comes to the debate over union labor or right to work labor, I find myself in a quandary. My aviation insurance business was in Michigan, and when I started in the early 1970's many of my first customers were union workers for GM in local Michigan plants. Those were days when GM employees had disposable cash from great jobs, and bought a lot of general aviation airplanes I was lucky enough to insure, and make a nice living at the same time. Times have changed, however, and disposable income after expenses has dried up, many have lost their jobs, and general aviation has shrunk from the heydays of the 80s and 90s. Today many of the small airports around Michigan look desolate and abandoned, not like earlier times when you could go to the airport on a nice sunny Sunday and watch general aviation aircraft take to the skies in droves. Be sure to watch Neil Cavuto's interview with the CEO of Untied Continental, Jeff Smisek and James McNerney, CEO of Boeing Monday, October 4th at 4:00pm. I am sure all of us interested in aviation and the economy will be in for some interesting conversation. In the meantime, let me know your thoughts about the state of aviation today. Until next time keep your wings straight and level Hersch! JetAviator7+ ps: Don't forget to sign up for our newsletter "All Things Aviation" here!
