Dangerous Landings

by John White |  | 3 comments

When I first started learning to fly there was a lot of controversy over dangerous landings. Most of the instructors and licensed pilots would revel at telling stories of hair-raising landings they had experienced teaching flying to student pilots. Over time it became clear to those of us who flew a lot that takeoffs could be every bit as dangerous as a dangerous landing. The above video shows an aircraft landing at one of the more dangerous airports in the world. The approach is strictly VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and presents some interesting challenges. However, the above landing is pure vanilla when you consider the following video: Clearly this student pilot was concentrating on flaring the aircraft and never saw the SUV approaching on the perimeter road. I guess this is why we have insurance, right? In the meantime keep your wings straight and level Hersch! Please share "Dangerous Landings" with your friends using the buttons below. Indeed the best thing is that no one was injured, I hope the airport will be able to take the necessary steps to make sure something like this doesn’t happen ever again.

Didn’t he come in a little low? Seems like he would’ve landed before the threshold… And there just shouldn’t be a road THAT close to a runway, it’s looking for trouble.

Ah…, so it’s the road’s fault for being too close to the runway? Or, he came in too low? But he was flying a high wing aircraft, shouldn’t he have been able to see the approaching car?

Was there a roadside sign saying “Low Flying Aircraft”? I have seen plenty of those in the past, but then a lot of drivers don’t seem to pay any attention to signs anyway because the are on their cell phones or texting!

Whatever the reason there were plenty of mistakes to go around, but most importantly I am glad no one was injured.
