Rocket Racing Comes Of Age?

by John M. White |

Dr. Diamandis is the Chairman and CEO of the X PRIZE Foundation (, which awarded the $10,000,000 Ansari X PRIZE for private spaceflight. Diamandis is an international leader in the commercial space arena, having founded and run many of the leading entrepreneurial companies in this sector. Diamandis also serves as the Chairman and CEO of Zero Gravity Corporation ( a commercial space company developing private, FAA-certified parabolic flight utilizing a Boeing 727-200 aircraft. He is the Chairman & co-founder of the Rocket Racing League ( After nearly 5 years spectators finally got a glimpse into the future of rocket racing at an air show in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday, April 26th, 2010. Earlier, in 2008 at Oskosh, a single rocket racer flew a demonstration flight with short bursts of rocket power which allowed the pilot to climb and maneuver unlike a normal airplanes. In 2005 Dr. Diamandis envisioned a Rocket Racing League in which pilots would use a head-up display of a computer generated course which would appear as a series of boxes through which the rocket planes would fly. Through the marvel of the internet viewers at home could race a computer-generated rocket racer head to head with the actual aircraft allowing spectators to virtually compete with the real thing. The Rocket Racers are a derivation of the Velocity Aircraft 4 place kit built plane designed by our friend Burt Rutan. In the future sponsors expect to build special aircraft specifically for the races. Want a taste? Watch the following video: Until next time keep your wings straight and level Hersch!
