Solar Impulse 2 Round The World Flight

by John White |

Solar Impulse 2I must admit to being a skeptic when I first learned of the idea of solar powered flight, but as time marches on there is no question but what technology continues to amaze. The Swiss have built a solar powered aircraft known as "Solar Impulse 2" and have embarked on the adventure of a lifetime - a round the world flight powered solely by solar power! Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg are pioneers, innovators and pilots who are the driving force behind the Solar Impulse project and will pilot the Solar Impulse 2 on it's round the world flight. The adventure began in Abu Dhabi on March 9th, 2015 flying first to Muscat and then on to Ahmedabad in India where the aircraft is today, March 11th, 2015. The journey will take 12 legs as follows:
  1. Leg 01 - Abu Dhabi to Muscat;
  2. Leg 02 - Muscat to Ahmedabad;
  3. Leg 03 - Ahmedabad to Varanasi;
  4. Leg 04 - Varanasi to Mandalay;
  5. Leg 05 - Mandalay to Chongqing;
  6. Leg 06 - Chogquing to Nanjing;
  7. Leg 07 - Nanjing to Hawaii;
  8. Leg 08 - Hawaii to Phoenix;
  9. Leg 09 - Phoenix to to Mid USA;
  10. Leg 10 - Mid USA to New York;
  11. Leg 11 - New York to Europe/North Africa;
  12. Leg 12 - Europe/North Africa to Abu Dhabi.
Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg want to share with the world the idea that existing clean technologies and pioneering spirit can change the world.
