The High Cost of Fuel Strikes Again!

by John M. White |

On May 28th DHL announced that it was replacing ABX Air (Airborne Express) which operates DC-9 and Boeing 767 aircraft through the DHL hub in Wilmington, Ohio. Night air operations would be contracted with UPS which has its own aircraft and operates a large hub in Louisville, KY. The high cost of fuel has caused DHL, the U.S. based express shipping unit of the German postal service Deutsche Post AG. DHL told ABX Air officials it would reduce the number of aircraft it would need from the ABX Air fleet by 39 jets over the next 12 to 18 months. This would reduce the number of ABX Air employees in Wilmington from about 7,000 to around 800 or 900. On another note, I spent some time today with a friend of mine who flies for an executive jet management company who told me that lately he has had to pay $ 2,800 to refuel one of the Citation Bravo aircraft he pilots. Depending upon the location the aircraft refuels at the cost of jet fuel could be as much as $ 9.00+ per gallon! Be thankful your car doesn’t run on jet fuel Hersch! Until next time keep your wings straight and level. JetAviator7
