"The Jet"

by John M. White |

Think of it - a project named "The Jet".  Kind of has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?  Well, the company that brought us technologically advanced piston aircraft complete with parachutes is aiming to bring us "The Jet".  This is not a VLJ (very light jet), but rather a true "Personal Jet". This aircraft by Cirrus has been under development since 2006, initially to create publicity for Cirrus, but now the real deal.  With over 400 deposits of $ 100,000 this is serious business! Complete with parachute the prototype was rolled out of a Northwest Airlines hangar on June 26, 2008, and wowed the public with its red over white paint scheme.  Made of composite materials the aircraft is headed for certification over the next few years. With the unusual configuration for a jet of two doors on either side of the fuselage the aircraft will seat a total of seven, including the pilot.  Designed for personal transportation the aircraft will be powered by a Williams fan jet and will cruise at 300 knots. According to Cirrus this jet aircraft will be an easy transition from the SR22 and provide a new market between high performance single engine aircraft and the new breed of very light jets.  Cirrus expects "The Jet" to be easy to fly, make maximum use of space and provide a level of safety not seen before in a light jet. While it will fly low and slow, it is meant to provide a jet set lifestyle without the expense or risk of a traditional business jet.  Flying at 25,000 feet it will cover 1,000 nautical miles at 300 knots for the owner/pilot.  The single engine jet should increase in popularity as the price of jet fuel continues to climb. Pretty cool, eh?  Until next time keep your wings straight and level Hersch! JetAviator7
