The Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” was produced as a training aircraft for the U.S. Army during World War I and later the “Jenny” became the backbone of American post-war aviation. The “Jenny” series of aircraft were first produced in 1915 at Glenn Curtiss’s factory in Buffalo, NY, and soon became one of the most famous aircraft of World War I.
The Student Pilot would sit in the front seat and the Instructor Pilot sitting in the back seat of the dual control biplane aircraft which was ideal for pilot training. The JN-4 had a service ceiling of 6,500 feet and a top speed of 75 mph and was powered by the famous Curtiss OX-5 V-8 liquid cooled engine.
The JN-4 was operated during the First World War by pilots from Argentina, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States as a primary flight training aircraft, and later found its way into civilian hands after the war as surplus aircraft were sold off.
After the war the “Jenny” became both a popular aircraft for training pilots to fly and was also used by pilots who flew around the United States putting on flight demonstrations and performing aerobatics for money. These pilots were known as “barnstormers” and the history of barnstorming includes many daredevil feats performed like wing walking, airplane to car transfers and doing aerobatics.
At the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio you can see N4D, serial number USAAC 2805, on display in the Early Years gallery of the museum.
With this in mind we have created a paper (or card) model version of this famous Curtiss “Jenny” aircraft which can be downloaded onto your computer, printed on poster paper in full color and assembled using just a Exacto knife and some white glue.
One of the advantages of our paper airplane models is that they can be reprinted as often as necessary, so if you make a mistake during assembly it is not problem. For years modelers behind the Iron Curtain could only make paper models, and you will be amazed at the detail and quality of these models.
